JUBILEE (Mary Chapin Carpenter)
-------------------------------
[Each chord is half of a 6/8 measure.]
[Actually in Bb; capo 3.]
[I usually play G as 320033 and C(9) as x32033, but MCC just plays G and C:
320003 and 332010. And she probably just plays Em (022000) instead of the
 Em7 (022033) that I play. (I play them differently because I don't have a
whole band behind me to "fill in" the sound.)]
[But, in the intro, it looks like she plays C as x32033 or x32013, and
 D as x54035 or x54030: not really D, but rather D(11) or D11.]
[Someone suggested to me that she might play it in EADGBD tuning; that
actually _sounds_ pretty good, but based on the videotape, I don№t think
that№s how she does it. But try it for a change of pace.]
[And one more note: in some of the verses (notably the one that starts with
"I can tell by the way you're listening"), the first four chords are
 G D/F# C/E G instead of G C G G.]

G C(9) G D G C(9) G D
[intro]
G C(9) G D G C(9) G D
[intro]

      G C(9) G G
I can tell by the way you're walking
         C(9) G D D
That you don't want company
     G C(9) G G
I'll let you alone and I'll let you walk on
            C(9) G D D
And in your own good time you'll be

C(9) G Em7 Em7
Back where the sun can find you
C(9) G D D
Under the wise wishing tree
G C(9) G G
And with all of them made we'll lie under the shade
    C(9) G D D
And call it a jubilee

And I can tell by the way you're talking
That the past isn't letting you go
But there's only so long you can take it all on
And then the wrong's gotta be on its own

And when you're ready to leave it behind you
You'll look back, and all that you'll see
Is the wreckage and rust that you left in the dust
        C(9) D G G
On your way to the jubilee

G C(9) G G C(9) G D D
[instrumental]

And I can tell by the way you're listening
That you're still expecting to hear
Your name being called like a summons to all
Who have failed to account for their doubts and their fears

They can't add up to much without you
And so if it were just up to me
I'd take hold of your hand, saying come hear the band
          C(9) D G G
Play your song at the jubilee

C(9) G Em7 Em7 C(9) G D D
[instrumental]
G C(9) G G C(9) G D D
[instrumental]

And I can tell by the way you're searching For something you can't even name That you haven't been able to come to the table Simply glad that you came And when you feel like this try to imagine That we're all like frail boats on the sea Just scanning the night for that great guiding light C(9) G D D Announcing the jubilee And I can tell by the way you're standing With your eyes filling with tears That it's habit alone keeps you turning for home Even though your home is right here Where the people who love you are gathered Under the wise wishing tree May we all be considered then straight on delivered C(9) G D D Down to the jubilee C(9) G Em7 Em7 'Cause the people who love you are waiting C(9) G D [hold for 1.5 measures] And they'll wait just as long as need be G C(9) G G When we look back and say those were halcyon days C(9) D G G We're talking 'bout jubilee G C(9) G G C(9) G D D [instrumental] G C(9) G G C(9) D G G. [instrumental] WHISTLE SOLO: [This is a guitar arrangement of the tin whistle solo; the ending follows a similar theme, but the notes are different. Improvise. The A and E strings have been left off to save space.] C(9) G Em7 E 0-----2-3--23-----------|------------------------| B --------------------10--|0-----------------------| G ----------------------2-|------------------2-0---| D ------------------------|------------------------| ^ . . ^ . . ^ . . ^ . .
